Fences

Intermediate

The Fence shape covers posts, enclosures, rails, wall-mounted siding, and multi-cell partitions. Some materials automatically connect to their neighbours with a bridging rail; others are fixed, free-standing pieces that ignore what's beside them. This guide covers every fence material and how each one behaves.

Switching to Fence

Select Fence in the Shape section of the sidebar. The material palette updates to show only fence-compatible materials, organised in the Fences category.

Auto-joining Posts and Rails

The following materials automatically connect to an adjacent post of the same material — or to any plain Block-shape cell — placed directly beside them along the X or Z axis. When two compatible posts are neighbours, a short connecting rail bridges the gap between them. Removing either post removes the rail too.

Rail connections only form along the X and Z axes — there is no vertical joining between stacked fence posts.

Tip: Auto-joining posts also connect to plain Block-shape blocks beside them — handy for anchoring a fence run to a wall or pillar.

Fixed Free-Standing Pieces

These materials are placed as single fixed shapes and do not connect to neighbours:

Arched FencingDLC 1A smooth segmental arch spanning a 2-wide footprint, with three interior pillars rising to meet the underside of the arch. Fixed shape — does not connect to neighbours. Supports colour tinting. Crafted from 2 Iron Ore (yield: 5).

Wall-Mounted Siding

These materials are flush panel pieces designed to be placed against wall faces:

Multi-Cell Partitions and Gates

Some fence materials reserve a footprint larger than one cell, the same way a Door does. Nothing else can be built in that space until the piece is erased.

Tip: When placing a multi-cell partition or gate, the placement snaps to the cell you tap — the footprint then extends in the +X/+Y direction from that cell. Use Rotate (R) to flip the orientation before placing.

Rotation

Auto-joining posts are symmetric, so rotation rarely matters for them — the rail forms along whichever axes have a neighbour. However, wall-mounted siding, multi-cell pieces, and free-standing shaped pieces like Arched Fencing and Arched Barrier are directional. Use R or the Rotate button to orient them correctly before placing.

Colour Tinting

Several fence materials support colour tinting — double-click or double-tap their swatch to open the colour picker and add a tinted variant. Tintable materials include Wooden Partition, Grate Fencing, Pointed Wooden Fencing, Arched Fencing, Ornate Partition, and Wooden Siding Panel. Auto-joining materials like Wooden Enclosure and Iron Enclosure do not support tinting.

Erase Behaviour

Erasing one post in an auto-joined run removes that post and any rails that connected to it. The posts on either side remain but their connecting rail to the erased cell is gone — leaving a gap in the fence line. To close the gap, simply place a new post in the empty cell and the rails re-form automatically.

Practical Fence Runs

For a straight fence line with auto-joining posts:

  1. Select Fence shape and an auto-joining material (e.g. Wooden Fencing).
  2. Place posts in a row along the X or Z axis, one cell apart. Rails form between each adjacent pair automatically.
  3. Use Placement Size Width or Length (set to the length of your run) with Build mode to lay the entire row in one tap — the posts and rails form in one action.
  4. Use Rotate if your run is along the Z axis and the material is directional.
